A man was killed in a rollover crash during heavy rain Sunday on a Chicago expressway.

A Toyota passenger van was traveling northbound on Interstate 55 at Cicero Avenue about 9:20 a.m. when its driver lost control of the vehicle due to the rain and veered from the center lane into the median barrier, Illinois State Police said in a statement.

The impact caused the van to overturn several times and eject an unbuckled rear passenger, state police said. The passenger, a 70-year-old man from Naperville, was taken to Stroger Hospital and pronounced dead three days later on Wednesday.

Two other occupants of the van, a 67-year-old Naperville woman and 12-year-old girl, were taken to hospitals in serious condition, state police said. Their conditions had stabilized.

State police reported that the 44-year-old female driver and 15-year-old male passenger were uninjured.

An autopsy released Thursday found the 70-year-old man died of multiple injuries from the crash, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. His death was ruled accidental.
