A man has died in hospital after suffering critical head injuries in an alleged assault in Dublin city centre.

The man, who was in his 40s, was allegedly attacked in the early hours of last Wednesday morning on Seville Place, Dublin 1.

He was raced to the Mater Hospital following the attack, where he was pronounced dead this morning, Dublin Live reports.

The man's body was taken to the Dublin City Morgue where a post-mortem examination was carried out this afternoon by Dr Heidi Okkers from the Office of the State Pathologist.

"Preliminary results of the post-mortem have been furnished to Gardaí details of which cannot be released for operational reasons," a garda spokesperson said.
