Man dies in hospital after police stopped him in Greenock street

An investigation has been launched after a man who 'took unwell' while with police officers died in hospital.

The man fell ill in Bank Street in the Inverclyde town at lunchtime on Wednesday.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene and he was rushed to the town's Inverclyde Royal Hospital (IRH).

Police confirmed that the man later died in hospital.

The cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

Police Scotland revealed on Thursday that a report on the incident was submitted to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).

The PIRC is a branch of the Scottish Government that investigates complaints made by members of the public against Police Scotland.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the 'full circumstances' surrounding the death.

A spokeswoman from Police Scotland told the Record: "At around 12.10 pm on Wednesday, February, 10 a man took unwell whilst engaged with officers on Bank Street, Greenock. 


“He was taken by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock where he was later died.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

"As is protocol, a report has been submitted to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC)."
