A man has fallen to his death from a balcony in the Ipswich CBD, west of Brisbane, while trying to escape police officers.

Police went to an apartment in the Oaks building on West Street at 7:45am on Wednesday to make inquiries.

Detectives from Taskforce Maxima had a search warrant for the 42-year-old man's apartment.

In a statement, the Queensland Police Service said upon seeing police "the man ran from officers and fell from the balcony".

The man, named as Mario Merlo, was known to police and was on bail.

He fell from level 13 onto the pool deck below and was declared dead at the scene.

Late on Wednesday afternoon, forensic officers were still at the apartment building.

Police ethical standards command is also investigating, along with the Crime and Corruption Commission.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
