A man has died after an excavator rolled over on a rail line in Tasmania's north.

Emergency services were called to the rail line next to Evandale Road at Evandale about 10.40am on Wednesday.

They found the man trapped by an excavator. He died at the scene.

Another man sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Launceston General Hospital as a precaution.

Work Safe Tasmania is investigating and a report will be prepared for the coroner following the man's death, Tasmania Police said.

Roadblocks remained in place at Evandale Road, Perth Mill Road, and Leighlands Road as of Wednesday afternoon.

Police urged motorists to avoid the immediate area to ensure emergency vehicles could safely move about.
