Man dies in car crash near Cedar Lake, Indiana

A 32-year-old man from Lowell, Indiana, was killed Tuesday in a car crash near Cedar Lake.

A man was killed Tuesday morning when the delivery truck he was driving was hit head on near Cedar Lake in Indiana.

At 4:15 a.m., officers responded to a call of a crash in the 12200 block of Wicker Avenue in unincorporated Cedar Lake. Lake County officers said a delivery truck was heading north on Wicker Avenue when a Dodge Ram pick-up truck heading in the opposite direction crossed the center line and crashed into the truck.

The driver of the delivery truck — 32-year-old Nicholas DeVries of Lowell, Indiana — was killed at the scene, police said. An autopsy found he died from blunt force trauma and his death has been ruled an accident, the Lake County coroner said.

His passenger, a 28-year-old man from Cedar Lake, was taken to Franciscan Health in Crown Point for treatment, police said.

The driver of the pick-up, a 23-year-old woman from Cedar Lake, was taken to Franciscan Health and then flown to the University of Chicago Medical Center for additional treatment, police said.

Lake Country detectives are investigating the cause of the crash.
