Man dies in car crash after police pursuit near Alice Springs

The crash happened in central Australia outside Atitjere, north-east of Alice Springs

A man has died after his car rolled and crashed following a police chase outside a remote community north-east of Alice Springs.

The fatality is being treated as a death in custody, although police have declined to say why the man, 42, was being chased.

Northern Territory police said officers came across a single-vehicle rollover on the Plenty Highway near Harts Range, north-east of Alice Springs, just after 5:00pm yesterday.

They said the vehicle had been involved in an earlier pursuit by officers but the chase was terminated prior to the crash.

The man was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.

Police say he was thrown from the car during the crash and died at the scene.

Police did not answer questions about what sparked the chase or how long before the crash the pursuit was called off.

The ABC understands the man was a father of two children and a cattle station worker from Atitjere community.

A worker in the community said Atitjere had shut down on Friday for sorry business over the man's death.

Police said detectives from the Southern Crime Investigations and Major Crash units were investigating the circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash on behalf of the coroner.
