A man has died after a boat crashed into rocks at Outer Harbor off the Adelaide coast.

The 77-year-old was found unresponsive soon after the incident on Thursday night which came after the boat experienced engine trouble.

A 66-year-old man on board was also tipped into the water but was winched to safety by a police helicopter.

He was taken to hospital with chest injuries not considered life-threatening.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner but say the older man's death is not suspicious.
