A murder investigation is underway after a man has died following a fatal stabbing in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The incident took place at 1:40am outside a premises near the GPO in the area.
The victim's age is currently unknown and a murder weapon was recovered at the scene.
He was taken to the Mater Hospital after the attack but was later pronounced dead.
It is being reported that the man was stabbed several times after getting into an altercation with another male in the area.
A man in his 20s was arrested following the fatal stabbing but he has since been taken to hospital to receive medical treatment
Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information or anyone who was on O'Connell Street in the early hours of this morning and who can assist Gardaí in this investigation to contact them at Store Street Garda station on 01 6668000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
O'Connell Street is currently still closed in both directions following the fatal stabbing.
