A man has died following an early morning collision on a busy north Dublin motorway.

The motorist received fatal injuries after two cars collided on the M1 northbound near Junction 6 Balbriggan at around 5:30am.

The man, whose age is not yet know, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to the City Morgue where a post-mortem will be carried out.

The driver of the second car was taken to hospital where his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The road remains closed at Junction 6 while garda forensic collision investigators examine the scene.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the collision to contact them.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing to any road users who may have travelled on the M1 this morning between 5.00am and 5.30am and who may have camera (dash cam) footage to contact them."
