Man dies following crash on M3 motorway in Meath as gardai close road

A man in his 50s has died following a crash on one of Ireland's busiest roads overnight.

The single-vehicle collision happened on the M3 motorway between Junction 5 at Dunboyne and Junction 6 near Dunshaughlin in Co Meath.

Gardai received a report shortly after 1am that a car had veered off the road and collided with a ditch.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident, but the diver was fatally injured in the crash. His body has since been taken from the scene.

The road is currently closed on the southbound lane between Junctions 5 and 6 and diversions are in place so that Garda Forensic Collision Investigators can conduct a technical examination of the scene

Motorists are advised to avoid the route if possible as there are heavy traffic delays being reported.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

They are particularly asking motorists who were travelling on the M3 between Navan and Dunboyne last night between 12.30am and 1.20am and who may have camera (dash cam) footage to make it available.

Anyone with any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact Ashbourne Garda Station on 01 801 0600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

It comes after a man in his 80s died after a collision in Donegal involving two vehicles on Thursday evening.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred at Greenbank, Quigley's Point in Muff.

The collision involved two vehicles and occurred on the R238 (between Muff and Quigley's Point).

The male driver aged in his 80s, the sole occupant of his vehicle, was fatally injured during the crash.

His body has been taken to the mortuary at Letterkenny General Hospital. A post-mortem will take place at a later date.

The driver and passenger (both men in their 30s) of the other vehicle were treated at the scene for their injuries.
