A man died days after suffering a medical emergency while swimming in Lake Michigan near North Avenue Beach.

About 2 p.m. July 14, 70-year-old Mykhailo Porfirian went into cardiac arrest while swimming near the 1500 block of North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m. July 24.

An autopsy released Thursday found Porfirian died from complications of drowning and ruled his death an accident, the medical examiner’s office said. He lived in Austin.
