Man dies at the scene following head-on road crash between van and car in Lanarkshire

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died following a road crash on the A70 near Carnwath yesterday afternoon.

Around 4.15pm on Thursday (November 7) the 49-year-old was driving a Ford Connect van on the stretch near Carnwath, when it was involved in a collision with a Mazda 6 car being driven in the opposite direction.

Emergency services attended, however the driver of the Ford Connect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 41-year-old driver of the Mazda was taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital. Hospital staff described his condition as “stable”.

Sergeant John Tait of the Divisional Road Policing Unit based at Motherwell said: “I am appealing to any witnesses to the crash and to anyone with information that may help our ongoing investigation to contact us.

“I would also like to hear from anyone who was driving on the A70 near Carnwath around the time of the crash on Thursday afternoon to come forward to officers, as they may hold information that will assist our enquiry.”

Road Policing Officers at Motherwell can be contacted through 101 quoting reference number 2401 of November 7.

South Lanarkshire Council tweeted that the road was closed after the incident.

They said: “The A70 Lang Whang has been closed due to an accident three miles north of Carnwath. Diversion is being put in place.”

The road has since reopened.
