Man dies as crash between Land Rover and lorry brings rush-hour gridlock

A driver has died in a crash between a car and lorry which brought rush-hour gridlock.

The motorist was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash involving a silver Land Rover and a HGV near the Posthouse Roundabout on the A55 near Chester today.

Police said the Land Rover collided with the lorry in a layby on the westbound carriageway of the road.

The crash initially led to one lane of the road being closed, before a full closure was put into place at around 8am.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "At around 6.25am today, Tuesday 12 November, officers were called to reports of a collision on the A55 westbound, near to the junction of the A483 Wrexham Road.  

"Officers attended the scene and found that a silver Land Rover had collided with a HGV in a layby at the side of the road.

"Sadly the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver's next of kin have been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers."

Motorists were urged to avoid the area as a result of the collision, with major delays building up as a result of the crash.

Long delays remained in place through the morning.

A spokesman said: "Enquiries in relation to the cause of the collision are ongoing and as a result a full closure is currently in place on the A55 westbound from the Vicars Cross junction.

"The closure is expected to remain in place for a number of hours, motorists are advised to avoid the area, traffic news will confirm when the road is re-opened."

No details have been released by police about the motorist.

The crash came as bad weather sparked problems across the region.

Mersey Ferries are suspended until noon and a fallen tree has blocked Roe Lane/Manchester Road in Southport. Problems with the overhead wires in Ditton has caused delays to trains between Liverpool and Crewe.
