Man dies and woman seriously injured after both are pulled from river in Clydach

A 62-year-old man has died and a woman is in hospital after being pulled from a river in Swansea.

Emergency services were called to the Heol Eithrim area of Clydach on Wednesday night after receiving reports of people in the nearby river.

Two people were pulled from the water and taken to Morriston Hospital but the man, who is from the local area, was pronounced dead.

The woman, who is also from the area, remains in hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

South Wales Police said the 62-year-old man's death was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for the force said: "Police were called to the Heol Eithrim area of Clydach, just after 10pm on Wednesday, August 12, following a report of people in the nearby river.

"Following a multi-agency response, a man and a woman were recovered from the water and were taken to Morriston Hospital, where the man – who is 62 and from the local area – was pronounced deceased.

"The woman, who is also from the local area, remains in hospital with what are serious but non-life threatening injuries.

"His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file of evidence is being prepared for the coroner."

The man who died was connected to Clydach Cricket Football Club which cancelled its activities last night as a mark of respect.

In a post on Facebook the club said: "Due to a tragedy last night, which led to the loss of close friend and supporter of Clydach Cricket Football Club, all training sessions will be cancelled tonight as a sign of respect. Our thoughts as a club are with all those affected. A further statement will be released in due course."
