Kent Police confirmed the male motorcyclist died in the incident (Joe Giddens/PA) - (PA Archive)

The M2 in Kent closed in both directions this morning following a fatal crash between a Tesla and a Yamaha motorcycle.

The collision occurred between Junction 4 in Gillingham and Junction 5 in Sittingbourne near Medway Services, at around 6.30am.

Emergency services closed the motorway, while the motorcyclist was treated by paramedics but sadly died at the scene. No update has been given regarding the occupants of the Tesla.

Kent Police confirmed that the eastbound carriageway was also shut by 7.30am due to the severity of the crash, with traffic brought to a standstill in both directions.

A National Highways spokesman said: "With emergency service crews working at the scene, National Highways Traffic Officers implemented traffic management to close the M2 to provide a safe working area.

"At 7.30am, Kent Police advised that the eastbound carriageway also needed to be closed due to the nature of the incident."

Motorists travelling between London and the Port of Dover were advised to use the M20 instead, while those passing through Medway were told to expect severe delays.

A Kent Police spokesman added: "Kent Police was called at 6.33am on Sunday 4 January 2026 to reports of a collision between a car and a motorcycle at Junction 5 of the M2 London-bound carriageway near Sittingbourne.

"Officers attended alongside paramedics who treated the motorcyclist for serious injuries. He was declared deceased at the scene.

"Officers have closed the junction while an investigation into the circumstances takes place. The coastbound carriageway was also closed at Junction 4, but re-opened at 11.26am."
