Man dies and another taken to hospital following crash on the A1 in Northumberland

A man has died following a serious collision on the A1 early on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Northumberland shortly before 2am on Monday following a collision between a car and a van.

The road was closed in both directions between South Charlton and Belford and police said a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police carried out collision investigation works and kept the road closed for almost seven hours before reopening it shortly before 9am.

A second man has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: " At 1.47am today (Monday), police received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1 near Belford.

"Emergency services attended and found a car had collided with a van.

"Sadly, one man was confirmed deceased at the scene. A second man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"The road was closed for more than six hours while the initial investigation took place.  The road has now been reopened."

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 01:41 this morning from police requesting for us to attend a serious RTC on the A1 at Chathill between a car and a van.

“We sent one ambulance, one Hazardous Area Response Team, an officer and a doctor and transported one patient to the major trauma centre at the RVI with serious injuries.”
