Man dies after suffering 'medical episode' at the wheel and crashing into a wall

A man has died after he suffered a 'medical episode' while driving and crashed into wall.

Emergency services were called to the smash in St Helens Road, in Leigh, at about 11.35pm on Thursday (March 11).

The driver of a Ford Mondeo fell ill at the wheel before crashing into a lamppost and the wall, police say.

The driver - a 50-year-old man - was taken to hospital following the incident.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he has since died from his injuries.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers were called around 11.35pm on Thursday 11 March 2021 to a report of a collision on St Helens Road, Leigh.

"Emergency services attended and enquiries have established the driver of a Ford Mondeo had suffered a medical episode and been in collision with a lamppost and a wall.

"The driver - a 50-year-old man - was taken to hospital where despite the best efforts of medical staff, he sadly died as a result of his injuries."
