A man has died having run on to a railway line in the midst of a police chase.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police attempted to stop the car in Twickenham on Powder Mill Land just after midnight on Tuesday.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the car did not stop and following a chase the man left his car and ran onto a railway line in Hounslow, just off Whitton Road.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) was called and attended the scene, yet the victim was pronounced dead at 12:22am. His next of kin have been informed and are apparently being supported by specialist officers.

A LAS spokesperson said: “We were called at 12:17am (20 April) to reports of an incident on Whitton Road near Hounslow station.

“We sent hazardous area response teams and an incident response officer. Sadly, a man had died at the scene,” Surrey Live reported.

The incident caused some travel disruption on the South Western Railway network as the line was shut between Feltham and Syon Lane.

A statement published on the South Western Railway website read: “We have been informed that emergency services are dealing with an incident between Feltham and Syon Lane. This means that all lines are blocked between these stations.

“Until further notice, services between Feltham and Barnes via Brentford and Hounslow may divert via Twickenham.”

Normal service was able to resume on the line at around 7:30am on Tuesday.

Several local residents took to Twitter to report a helicopter hovering in the area in the early hours of the morning.

One user commented: “Anyone know what’s happened at Hounslow - the road to the railway station is closed. Perhaps connected to the helicopter last night?”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct, is investigating what happened and the Metropolitan Police’s internal Directorate of Professional Standards has also been informed.
