Man dies after reaching summit of Mount Snowdon despite desperate rescue attempt

A walker has died after reaching the summit of Mount Snowdon on Friday.

The man - who has not been named - had been climbing Mount Snowdon with his friends but fell ill after reaching the peak.

Wales Air Ambulance, the Coastguard and mountain rescue teams rushed to the scene and performed CPR.

But he could not be saved and was pronounced dead just five hours later.

A Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team spokesman said: "Unfortunately the gentleman did not respond to treatment and passed away.

"The team then transported him down to our base in Nant Peris and also gathered up his friends from the hill to where they could be informed by officers from North Wales Police of the sad news.

"Everyone in the team wishes to pass on our sympathies to his friends and family at this difficult time."

At 3,500ft high Snowdon is the tallest mountain peak in England or Wales and 360,000 people attempt the climb each year.
