Man dies after police and paramedics rush to scene of 'medical episode' near Wigan

A man has died after suffering a 'medical episode' in Golborne.

Paramedics rushed to Heath Street, near Wigan, at 9.40am yesterday (Monday) following reports of a person in a serious condition.

Police closed off the road for around an hour while the man was treated at the scene and then rushed to hospital.

However, despite receiving further treatment, he was pronounced dead later that day.

Ambulance services initially said the man was in his 60s but police have now confirmed he was 80 years old.

A spokesperson for GMP said investigators did not believe there were any criminal offences involved in the man's death.

They said: "Officers were called around 9.40am on Monday, February 15, to Heath Street, Golborne, to a report of a man suffering a medical episode.

"Emergency services attended and an 80-year-old man was taken to hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was sadly pronounced dead.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Residents spotted several ambulances in the street yesterday morning and a police car which was blocking other traffic from passing through.

The road was reopened shortly after 10am when emergency crews had left the scene.
