Man dies after Mazda hits bridge in M6 crash

A driver has died and a passenger was left seriously hurt after the car they were in crashed into a bridge on the M6.

Emergency services including an air ambulance were called to the scene of the crash on Wednesday afternoon.

Closures were put in place between J20 Lymm Interchange and J19 Knutsford after reports a red Mazda had struck a bridge shortly before 4pm.

Today police confirmed that a man driving the Mazda died at the scene.

They have not given details of the man's age or where he was from.

A female passenger suffered serious injuries but they are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

A witness appeal has now been launched into the crash which prompted lengthy closures with congestion trailing back for several miles to the M62.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "Officers are appealing for information following a fatal collision on the M6.

"At 3.58pm on Wednesday 12 May police were called to the M6 between junction 20 and junction 19 following reports of a serious collision involving a red Mazda that had collided with a bridge.

"The driver of the Mazda, a man, sadly died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

"A passenger of the Mazda, a woman, was taken to hospital for serious but non life-threatening injuries."

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have any dashcam footage of the vehicle before the incident is urgerd to come forward.
