Man dies after house fire on Brisbane's bayside

One man died at the scene, another escaped unharmed.

A man in his 60s has died as a result of a house fire at Sandgate on Brisbane's bayside.

Multiple Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) crews fought the blaze, which broke out at the duplex property about 11:30am.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, before removing the unconscious man from the residence.

QFES Inspector Simon Evans said the man was found in his bathroom.

"The fire was well-advanced, firefighters had to knock the fire down to reach the casualty," he said.

"The fire also extended up through the ceiling into the adjoining duplex and that's also been severely damaged by fire.

"It's always difficult for firefighters when they enter a building, they go in there hoping not to find someone but, when they do, they do their best to preserve the person's life and bring them out."

Firefighters performed CPR outside the Wakefield Street property before the Queensland Ambulance Service arrived a short time later.

Paramedics worked for about 30 minutes to revive the man, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Another man aged in his 70s was in the adjoining duplex but escaped without injury.

The fire is being treated as suspicious, with investigations into its cause underway.
