Man dies after going missing while herding sheep on Isle of Harris

A crofter who sparked a major search and rescue operation has died after being airlifted to hospital.

The man, whose age is unknown, failed to return from a trip on Harris where he is understood to have been tending to farm animals.

Teams of searchers were summoned to the remote area near Hushinish after the alarm was raised at 2.30pm on Monday.

Members of the Hebrides Mountain Rescue team also participated in the search.

The crofter was later found and flown by a Coastguard helicopter to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.

He was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A spokesperson said: “Around 2.30 pm on Monday 3 August 2020, police received a concern for person call after a man failed to return from a trip on Harris.

“A search and rescue operation was launched and the man was located in the Hushinish area and taken to hospital where he died.

“The death is not suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
