Man dies after getting trapped under wagon in horror industrial accident

A 50-year-old man died during a horror accident in Lancashire in which he became trapped under a wagon.

Police, an ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and two air ambulances rushed to Smalden Lane in the village of Bolton by Bowland at around 2.15pm on Tuesday following reports of an "industrial accident".

But police said the man, whose identity has not been released, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive and Lancashire Constabulary have launched a joint investigation into the tragedy.

LancsLive reported that the man was part of a crew working on the road when the accident occurred involving a wagon slipping into a ditch.

A neighbour told the outlet of his shock after witnessing the emergency response and hearing of the tragedy.

He said: "I came out here and looked out and I could see this wagon tipped over. The workmen were still here doing the road repairs and the digger driver said there’s a driver trapped in wagon and that were it.”

He added: “It’s a disaster. It’s a disaster for that poor chap and his family.”

A police spokesperson said on Wednesday: “We were called at around 2.15pm yesterday to reports of an industrial accident on Smalden Lane, Bolton by Bowland. A man in his 50s had become trapped under a wagon, suffering fatal injuries. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“A joint investigation between the Health and Safety Executive and the police is underway. Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.”
