Man dies after falling into moat at Caerphilly Castle where Doctor Who was filmed

A man has died after falling into a moat at one of the UK's biggest castles.

The man, believed to be aged 82, was out walking when he plunged into the water at Caerphilly Castle in Wales.

He was pulled from the water of the Doctor Who filming location, but could not be revived.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in a desperate bid to save the walker at around 8pm on Tuesday night amid reports of a man in distress.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and the man's family have been informed, cops confirmed.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

The castle, built in the 13th Century by Gilbert de Clare is currently in the middle of a £5million restoration project under management of Welsh heritage foundation Cadw.

It is famous for being the second largest in Britain, covering a whopping 30 acres. It is beaten only by Windsor Castle.

Following Doctor Who's revival in 2005, it has been used in several episodes of the hit BBC show.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police told the Mirror: "We received a call reporting a man had been found unresponsive in the Caerphilly Castle moat at around 7.50pm on Tuesday 4 July.

"Officers attended, along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service who confirmed the 82-year-old man was dead.

"The man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious."
