Man dies after falling into canal, police confirm

A man in his 60s has died after he fell into a canal during a heatwave, police have confirmed.

The man in his 60s fell into a stretch of the Erewash Canal near Ilkeston Road, Sandiacre, on Monday, July 18.

Emergency services attended the scene on Monday, July 18, and rescued the man from the water, Derbyshire Live reports.. He died a short time later, with Derbyshire police saying that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

The Met Office had issue a "danger to life" warning during the extreme temperatures experienced on Monday and Tuesday.

Firefighters from Ilkeston, Derby Kingsway and Buxton fire stations were all deployed to the scene. Police and an air ambulance were also called out, officials confirmed.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called to Ilkeston Road, Sandiacre just before 5.10pm on Monday 18 July to report that a man had fallen in the canal. Emergency services attended and the man, who was in his 60s, was rescued from the water. He sadly died a short time later.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a file is being prepared for the coroner. Our thoughts go out to the man’s family at this sad time".
