Man dies after falling into baggage level at San Francisco airport

A man has fallen to his death at San Francisco airport, authorities said.

The unidentified man plunged from the mezzanine level into the baggage area multiple stories below.

“At approximately 8:45am PDT, a male, aged approximately late 50s/early 60s, fell from the mezzanine level in Terminal 3 down to the baggage claim level”, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said in an email.

How the fall occurred is currently under investigation, Mr Yakel said.

A representative of the San Mateo County coroner's office did not immediately have additional information.

San Francisco International Airport is a busy transit hub, with some 55 million travellers passing through over the course of last year.
