Man dies after falling from Newcastle's Tyne Bridge as witnesses look on in horror

A man has died after plunging from a bridge as witnesses looked on in horror at midday.

The man fell from the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, prompting a huge response to the Quayside from police officers, fire crews and paramedics.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and a spokesperson for Northumbria Police confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man's death, which remains under investigation, ChronicleLive reported.

His name has not been released. Officers are working to identify him to notify his family.

Witnesses raised the alarm after the man plunged from the bridge, which links Newcastle and Gateshead, over the River Tyne at about 12pm.

Police do not believe there was any third party involvement in the incident.

A witness tweeted: "There’s about 5 cars stopped and an ambulance and some bloke peering over the edge of the bridge.

"How awful man."

Investigators are preparing a report for the coroner.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "At 12pm today (Saturday), police received a report that a man had fallen from the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle.

"Emergency services attended however, sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

"Enquiries are ongoing to formally identify the man and contact his next of kin.

"There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report is being prepared for the coroner.”
