A man in his 50s has died after an e-scooter he was riding crashed into a pole at West End in Brisbane this morning.

Authorities were called to the scene at Riverside Drive near the Go Between Bridge around 6:30am.

Queensland Police said nearby pedestrians tried to perform first aid on the man.

Paramedics also tried to treat the man, who was in a critical condition, but he could not be revived.

The man was riding a privately owned scooter.

Regional Duty Officer Inspector Daniel Bragg said he was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident and police were still investigating the speed at which the scooter was travelling.

"We do know that the scooter overtook a pushbike just prior to the incident," he said.

"However, the pushbike rider wasn't travelling at any great speed so the speed that he was doing at the time is yet to be determined."

He said after the scooter overtook the pushbike, it became "a little wobbly".

"He lost control. He hit a post and the scooter kept going," Inspector Briggs said.

He said it was not the first scooter-related death he had attended, and stressed roads were a "dangerous" place for them.

"There's no doubt that the scooter riders are particularly vulnerable because they don't have the protection that a car's got," he said.

Inspector Bragg said police were considering the "distinct possibility" that the man suffered a medical episode during the incident.

The forensic crash unit was at the scene and will be conducting a full investigation of the incident.
