Man dies after collapsing in street outside coronavirus walk-through test site

A man has tragically died after collapsing outside a coronavirus walk-through test centre.

The man passed out in Villa Street, Newtown, Birmingham, outside a testing facility on Tuesday afternoon.

It is understood he suffered a cardiac arrest - sparking a medical emergency alert just before 5pm.

It has not been confirmed whether the man had been for a coronavirus test at the facility before his death.

Two ambulances and a marked police car were called to the street, where the man was found in a critical condition.

Medics immediately began CPR, but despite their efforts, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Serco, which owns the Covid testing site, have been contacted for a statement (file photo) (SWNS)

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a medical emergency on Villa Street at 4.57pm yesterday.

"Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the West Midlands Care Team were sent to the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, in a critical condition.

"Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite their best efforts, it became apparent nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

West Midlands Police confirmed they attended reports of a man suffering a cardiac arrest in Villa Street, but had no other involvement.

The testing centre, on the corner of Nursery Street, was among the first of its nature in the country as the area became a coronavirus hotspot.

The service opened at the start of July and was also Birmingham's first 'walk-through' - sparking hopes testing would be made easier for locals.

Mirror Online has contacted Serco, which owns the Covid testing site, for a statement.
