Man dies after car ploughs into sign outside M62 service station - police appeal for witnesses

Police have launched an investigation after man died following a crash on the M62 motorway.

A Chevrolet Matiz car being driven by an 81-year-old man collided with a sign along the exit at Birch Services at around 5.30pm on Tuesday 29 October.

He was taken to hospital but sadly died two days later.

The man's family have been informed of his death.

Police are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash and may hold 'vital' answers about how the tragedy occured.

PC Philip Shaw, of GMP’s Serious Investigation Collision Unit, said: "First and foremost I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the man’s loved ones at what must be an incredibly sad and difficult time.

"I want to assure them that we are working hard to establish exactly what happened and provide answers.

"I appreciate that it has been a few days since the incident but I am making a direct appeal to the public in the hope that someone may have vital answers.

"Did you see the Chevrolet Matiz car prior to the collision?

"If so, or you have any information that you think could assist us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch."

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 2050 of 05/11/19. Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
