Man dies after car hits ditch in overnight crash near Arva, Co Longford

A man has died in an overnight crash after his car left a road and hit a ditch.

The driver, in his 30s, was seriously injured when his vehicle, a black Ford Focus, left the R198 near the village of Arva at Moyne in Co Longford.

The accident happened shortly before 2am on Sunday.

It's understood the man was travelling from Drumlish in the direction of Arva when the collision occurred.

He was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel and removed to Cavan General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man was the sole occupant of the car.

The stretch of road at the crash site is closed to traffic and local diversions are in place.

An examination of the car and scene will be carried out by a Garda forensic team and a report will be prepared for the local coroner.
