Man dies after car hits buffalo in NT

A 54-year-old man has died after the car he was travelling in hit a buffalo near a remote community in East Arnhem Land.

An NT Health spokesperson said the man was one of eight passengers in a four-wheel-drive station wagon that was travelling on the Central Arnhem Road, 228 kilometres south of Nhulunbuy when it hit a buffalo and rolled.

The man died at the scene.

Police said the remaining six passengers had been undergoing treatment for various injuries since the crash, which happened about 5:00am on Sunday.

"The other five occupants were taken to Gapuwiyak clinic for treatment to various non-life-threatening injuries, including broken bones. Some passengers are expected to be transported to Royal Darwin Hospital later today," Duty Superintendent Chris Board said.

A breath test on the driver returned a negative alcohol reading.

The man's death brings the Northern Territory road toll to 18 this year.
