Man dies after car crashes into pub in early hours of morning

A man has died after a car crashed into a pub in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Heroic police officers rescued two men from the vehicle, which caught fire, but the passenger, 23, died a short time later in hospital.

The driver, also 23, is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Police officers in a patrol car were driving past when the crash took place on Trinity Way in Salford at around 3.30am on Sunday.

Video footage from the scene shows flames shooting from the bonnet of the white car after it had smashed into the front of the Black Friar pub.

Two men were rescued from the vehicle by police officers, who then tried to put out the fire.

Pc Andrew Nicholson said: "This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly lost his life.

"Our thoughts remain with his loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

"I would also like to praise the bravery of the officers who rescued the men from vehicle and the work of the emergency services at the scene.

"An investigation is under way into the circumstances leading up to the crash."

Trinity Way was closed on Sunday morning from Chapel Street to Great Ducie Street, while the police investigation was carried out.

It has now reopened.

The Black Friar, which has been closed for almost 20 years, was due to reopen later this month after a £1.7m restoration.

Black Friar managing director Neil Burk said: "With just over a week to go until we open our doors this is a devastating blow however our first thoughts are with those involved in this morning’s accident.

"We’re going to do everything we can to try and get our pub open on July 27 as planned and we’ll be in touch with those who have made bookings as soon as we know more."
