Man dies after blaze levels his garage home on Tasmania's east coast

A 61-year-old man has died in a shed fire on Tasmania's east coast.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Meredith Court in Swansea shortly after 4:00pm yesterday.

Flames had fully engulfed a 10-metre by 10-metre garage at the back of a property.

Once the blaze was contained, emergency crews discovered the body of a man they believe was living in the garage.

Detective Acting Inspector Ricky Newman said formal identification could take weeks.

"When [the emergency services] arrived there, there was a large shed that was on fire," he said.

"Once that fire had been extinguished, unfortunately a body was found inside.

"At this stage there's been no formal identification of that body but it's believed to be a 61-year-old male who may have resided in that shed.

"The cause of that fire is unknown at this stage, it's not believed to be suspicious."

Investigations are underway to determine what caused the blaze.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
