Man dies after being ‘trapped in fire’ at suspected cannabis factory in Hackney

A man has died after becoming “trapped by a locked garage door” at a fire in a suspected cannabis factory in Hackney.

Neighbours said the victim, a man in his 30s, was locked in at the single-storey workshop when the fire broke out on New Year’s Eve.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled the fire that broke out at 4pm in Southwold Road, Clapton.

Firefighters found a man inside the building and dragged him out of the property.

He was taken to hospital by paramedics in a critical condition where he later died.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the LFB and the Metropolitan Police.

One neighbour told the Standard: “We were told a man had died. All our power turned off and we could see a lot of smoke coming out

“The police told us the garage door was locked from the outside so he couldn’t get out. It’s very sad for someone to die like that on New Year’s Eve.”

Scotland Yard said they were probing “a fire at a suspected cannabis factory” in Clapton. One man has been arrested and released under investigation in connection with the incident.
