Worker dies after being trapped in shipping container at Melbourne kitchen supply business

Paramedics, firefighters and police attended the scene.

Authorities say a man who died inside a shipping container in Melbourne's north was crushed to death by stone sheets.

Police said the man was inside the shipping container at a kitchen cabinet business in Campbellfield about 10:00am, when it was believed the stone sheets shifted and trapped him underneath.

WorkSafe Victoria said the man, who was aged in his 40s, was crushed while unloading the container.

Firefighters coordinated efforts to free the man's body from the container, before it was taken away by a coroner's van this afternoon.

The Melbourne Fire Brigade said about 25 firefighters were called to the scene and worked with heavy rescue specialists, high-angle rescue technicians and urban search and rescue operators.

Distressed workers comforted one another outside the business, speaking with detectives and WorkSafe investigators.

Relatives of the man were also at the scene.

A second man was taken to hospital for observation.

WorkSafe inspectors will prepare a report for the coroner.

"The death brings the number of workplace fatalities this year to seven, which is two more than at the same time last year," WorkSafe said in a statement.
