Man dies after being thrown into river as car crashes into bridge

A man has died after being thrown from his car into a river when it crashed into a bridge in South Lanarkshire.

The incident happened on the A721 near Carnwath at around 6.55pm on Sunday.

His Vauxhall Meriva struck the bridge parapet over the North Medwin River, causing the vehicle to fall into the field below.

The 52-year-old driver was ejected from the car and landed in the river.

He was removed from the water by two passers-by but died at the scene.

Police Scotland appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Stuart Bell at the Road Policing Unit, Motherwell said he is particularly keen to speak to an off duty female nurse and a man who stopped at the scene to assist but had left before police arrived.

A police statement added: "These two people and anyone else who was in the vicinity and witnessed the crash should contact Motherwell Road Policing Unit via telephone number 101 quoting incident number 3372 of 22 September 2019."
