Man dies after being tasered by police in Canberra's south

One of the front windows of the home was shattered and there were reports of a man yelling.

A man has died after being tasered by police in the Canberra suburb of Waramanga.

Officers were called to a disturbance at a house on Larakia Street about 11:30am on Tuesday after reports of smashing glass and a male voice yelling.

Police said the man seriously hurt himself and they deployed a Taser once to stop any further harm.

But the man was unable to be revived and died at the scene.

Australian Federal Police Professional Standards is investigating and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

It is believed to be the first death of a person after being tasered in the ACT.

Neighbour Ben Mitchell said police had previously been called to the home, blocking off the street for about eight hours.

"They eventually got him in cuffs and took him away ... but it was quite annoying because no-one was able to get to their homes," he said.

He said the man lived alone in the house with his dog.

Another neighbour, Tim Foster, said the street was usually "pretty quiet" and he was "shocked" when he returned home to find a major police operation underway.

Government planning to equip every officer with Taser

Currently not all ACT Policing officers carry Tasers, but the Government is moving to increase their usage, aiming for all officers to be equipped within four years.

In 2014, then-assistant commissioner Rudi Lammers denied Tasers were being overused by ACT police, especially during mental health incidents.

Larakia Street was closed to traffic for hours on Tuesday afternoon with police directing traffic away from the area.

Forensic officers were also on the scene, collecting evidence as part of the investigation.
