Man dies after being stung by wasp while working in the garden

A pensioner died after he was stung by a wasp while he was gardening.

Ian Flack suffered an anaphylactic shock while working outside a friend's home in Cae’r Hafod Canol, Bontuchel in Wales.

Despite the efforts of passers-by and a nearby vet who was flagged down, attempts to resuscitate him failed.

He was declared dead at the scene on October 24 last year, Wales Online reported.

The 76-year-old had been carrying out work for Eileen Jones when he was stung.

When she returned back to her home he was sat in his van and explained to her he felt unwell.

Mr Flack went to sit on her porch, but as she began to call a doctor he collapsed, prompting Mrs Jones to ring 999.

In a statement read at his inquest in Ruthin, Mrs Jones said his face was purple and his lips and face were swollen.

A defibrillator was brought from the nearby village hall but there were no signs of life and paramedics confirmed he had died.

A post-mortem examination by Dr Mared Owen-Casey confirmed the retired forestry worker had died of anaphylactic shock, but there was nothing to indicate he had been stung.

Around a year before his death Mr Flack had visited his GP, Dr Peter Leatt, complaining of feeling unwell after being stung in the back.

His breathing had been fast but he recovered after sitting in the waiting room for a while.

The doctor prescribed him antihistamine.

Recording a conclusion of accidental death Joanne Lees, assistant coroner for North Wales East and Central, said it was likely that Mr Flack had been stung by more than one wasp on the day he died.

Just four days after his death Mr Flack's long-term partner Beryl died of natural causes.
