Man dies after being shot in chest outside petrol station in Chelmsford

A man has died after being shot in the chest outside a petrol station in Chelmsford.

Police said the 34-year-old victim was with another man outside a BP garage when a blue Ford Fiesta pulled up shortly after 2am.

“He was shot by an occupant of the car, which drove off,” a spokesperson said.

“He was taken to hospital, where he sadly died.”

Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Jennings, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said investigators believed the shooting involved people who knew each other.

“Several members of the public went to the aid of the victim and his friend, and I want to thank them for their assistance in what clearly would have been harrowing circumstances,” he added.

“We have spoken to a number of witnesses but I am keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened and has yet to come forward.”

Chief Inspector Ronnie Egan said such incidents were “extremely rare” and sought to reassure the local community.

“Although we believe there is no wider risk to the community, I know residents will be very concerned,” he added.

“My local policing teams are out on extra patrols and we are also working with partners to provide reassurance.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward as they seek to trace the car involved, and are looking for mobile phone or dash cam footage of the shooting.

Witnesses are asked to call police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
