Man dies after being shot by police in Sydney's west

NSW region commander Assistant Commissioner Dennis Clifford says police are yet to identify the man who was shot by police or establish his motive for carrying a knife.

A man has died after being shot by police during a confrontation at Quakers Hill police station in Sydney’s north-west.

The man, carrying a large knife, entered the station on Lalor Road and was shot by an officer just before 10.40am on Tuesday. He died at the scene.

NSW region commander Assistant Commissioner Dennis Clifford said police were still working to establish the identity of the man, who was in his 40s.

He said there was no indication the confrontation was terrorism-related but the man’s motivations were not yet known.

Only one shot was fired, and both police officers and members of the public witnessed the shooting. Clifford said the officer who fired the shot was “very distressed”. No police officers were injured.

A critical incident team from the state crime command’s homicide squad will investigate the shooting, overseen by the professional standards command as per protocol. A brief is being prepared on behalf of the coroner.

An ambulance and a CareFlight helicopter are understood to have left the area, but parts of Lalor Road remained cordoned off on Tuesday afternoon.

A Quakers Hill resident, Donna Murphy, had posted to the community’s Facebook group that there were “helicopters everywhere”.

Bus routes 752 and T72 were diverted from Pearce and Lalor roads.

Police urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to use its online reporting page.
