Man dies after being seriously injured during charity boxing match

An investigation has been launched after a young man died after taking part in a charity boxing event at a city centre nightclub. The victim, aged in his 20s, was rushed to hospital after he suffered serious injuries during the boxing match at Tramps nightclub in Worcester on Saturday.

Medics battled to save the man, who has not yet been named, but he later died at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It is understood the man had taken part in a boxing match before collapsing in the ring.

Ultra White Collar Boxing, which organised the event to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, said they had been left "devastated" by the tragedy.

A spokesperson said: “Everyone at Ultra White Collar Boxing was devastated to hear of the tragic death of this young man. Our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends at this very sad time. We will, of course, offer them all the support we can.

“With investigations now underway into the cause of his death it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

Simon Ledsham, fundraising director at Cancer Research UK, added: “We send our sincerest condolences to the family of the man who tragically died in hospital after taking part in an Ultra White Collar Boxing event on Saturday where participants fundraised for Cancer Research UK.

"Our thoughts are with the man’s loved ones and friends at this time.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service and West Mercia Police officers were both called to scene following the incident.

A police spokesperson said: "At around 7.50pm on Saturday (April 9) officers received a report concerned for the welfare of a man at a business premises on Angel Place, Worcester. Officers and West Midlands Ambulance Service attended.

"A man in his 20s was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in a serious condition."

They added there were "no ongoing enquiries" into the death.

An ambulance service spokesperson said: “We were called at 7.46pm to reports of an incident on Angel Place, Worcester. Two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a Critical Care Car from the Air Ambulance Service and a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic attended the scene.

"Upon arrival we found a man who had sustained serious injuries. He received treatment from ambulance staff at the scene. He was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further assessment.”
