Man dies after being pulled from Lake Michigan near Diversey Harbor: police

Rescue crews pulled two people out of the water about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of North Lake Shore Dr. | Justin Jackson/Sun-Times

A man died Saturday after being found in the water about 2 miles from shore in Lake Michigan, according to police.

The man, 31, was on a boat with two other people about 3:30 p.m. near Diversey Harbor, Chicago police said. The three of them decided to go for a swim and jumped into the Lake.

The anchor on the boat was not dropped and the boat started drifting away, police said. One man was able to swim back to the boat, while the other two men, 31 and 28, attempted to swim back to shore but were unable to.

The Chicago Fire Department’s Marine Unit was able to help the man who was able to swim back to the boat to return to shore as first responders scrambled to recover the other two swimmers, police said. They were discovered unconscious and pulled from the water, Chicago police said.

The 31-year-old was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet where he later died, police said. The 28-year-old was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center and stabilized.

Area North detectives are investigating.
