Man dies after being hit by unmarked police car in Warrington

A man has died after he was hit by an unmarked police car in Warrington on Monday night.

The pedestrian was in collision with a large, dark coloured unmarked Cheshire Police BMW on Warrington Road, Penketh, at around 7.20pm, the Echo reports.

The windscreen was shattered in the collision.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but the man was found to be dead.

The crash happened near to the Sportsmans Arms pub and police are appealing for witnesses to get in touch.

Road closures were put in place between Liverpool Road and Farnworth Road as forensic officers investigated the incident.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police confirmed that the pedestrian had died in the crash and the force has voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

It said: "The incident involved an unmarked police and a pedestrian took place at 7.20pm on Monday 3 February on Warrington Road in Penketh.

"The pedestrian - a man - died at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing at this time."

The spokesman added that "in line with normal procedure, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct".
