Man dies after being hit by train between Gateshead Stadium and Felling Metro stations

A man has died after being hit by a train in Gateshead.

Emergency services were called at about 5.30am on Saturday between Gateshead Stadium and Felling Metro stations.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and police said inquiries are ongoing to trace the man's next of kin.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 5.30am police received a report that a person had been struck by a train between Gateshead Stadium and Felling Metro stations.

"Emergency services attended but sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Inquiries are ongoing to trace the man’s next of kin at this time.”

The Metro and Northern Rail services were temporarily suspended between Newcastle and Sunderland as emergency services worked at the scene.

They are now operating again but are subject to delays.
