'Suspicious' death in Tasmania's north-west

A 23-year-old man is dead after an incident on Tasmania's north-west coast.

Police and ambulances were called to Ritchie Avenue in Burnie at about 3:00am on Sunday following reports of an altercation.

The young father from Burnie was critically injured and taken to the North West Regional Hospital where he later died.

Police are treating the death as "suspicious".

Detective Inspector Rob Gunton said four men and one woman were in custody.

"They were all known to each other," he said.

"They're certainty not friends.

"He [the dead man] had other people with him, but he was the focus of the attack.

"There were weapons involved, and the nature of those weapons I'm not at liberty to disclose at this point as it still forms part of our investigation."

No guns were used.

Police said they were still speaking with a number of witnesses.

"The police officers that attended initially have all gone home," Detective Gunton said.

"There will be grievance and stress-management programs and debriefs arranged for them, because obviously it was a fairly traumatic scene for those who attended initially."

No charges have been laid and forensic investigators remain on the scene.
