Man dies after 'accidental' bungalow fire in Ilkeston

An 89-year-old man has died following an accidental fire at a bungalow.

Crews were called at 7.49am on Tuesday December 8, to attend a serious fire at a property on Rossendale, in Ilkeston.

Firefighters from Ilkeston, Heanor and Nottinghamshire’s Eastwood station attended the fire and rescued the 89-year-old man.

Crews who had entered the property wearing breathing apparatus, carried out first aid on him before handing him into the care of East Midlands Ambulance Service who took him to hospital where he later died.

Group Manager Adam Bleakman said: “Earlier this morning firefighters rescued an elderly gentleman from a fire in a bungalow on Rossendale in Ilkeston.

"Tragically, despite the efforts of Firefighters and East Midlands Ambulance Service we have been informed that the gentleman sadly passed away later this morning.

“The thoughts of everyone at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service are with the family and friends of the deceased at this distressing time.”

An investigation into the cause of the fire has determined that the most likely cause was accidental due to an electrical appliance, the fire service said.

Over the coming days a team of Firefighters and Community Safety Officers will be in the local area talking to residents, providing reassurance and fire safety advice.

Officers from Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue will now be preparing reports for the coroner.
