Man died on birthday after partner allegedly poisoned drinks

A New South Wales woman accused of poisoning her partner by lacing his drinks with prescription medication has faced an Adelaide court charged with murder.

Wendie-Sue Dent, 59, was arrested on Monday after a complex investigation involving toxicology reports and interstate property searches.

Her fiancé David Lawrence, 62, was found dead in his home at Morphett Vale in Adelaide's south in December 2015 and the case was declared a major crime by South Australian detectives earlier this year.

Police allege Dent deliberately laced the man's drinks and possibly his food with medication which poisoned him over time.

It was alleged toxicology tests revealed lethal doses of drugs which had not been prescribed to Mr Lawrence.

Mr Lawrence died on his birthday, court files alleged.

The woman moved to Dapto in New South Wales after Mr Lawrence's death and a police search of her property was made earlier in the year.

Members of Mr Lawrence's family attended the brief hearing at Adelaide Magistrates Court, where Dent did not seek bail and was remanded in custody until September.

Mr Lawrence's brother, Phillip, told reporters it had been a "horrible" 18 months since the death and he expressed gratitude for the police efforts.

"We don't want to make any comment at the moment, it's just too premature but our whole family are very grateful for the work the police have done," he said.
